What this office does, and what it doesn't

Dental care is not a substitute for medical care. This page says where one stops and the other starts, so you know what to expect from us.

Dr. DeJesus is a general dentist. She looks after teeth, gums, the bite and the jaw joints, and she tells you when something she sees needs a physician, or a dentist who focuses on one field.

Where the line is

  • What we do

Exams and cleanings, X-rays when needed, fillings, crowns, tooth removal, night guards and checks of your bite and jaw. We tell you what we see and what the options are.

    • Name each material before using it

    • Give a written estimate first

    • Check old work at each exam

  • What we leave to your physician

Diagnosing or treating any medical condition, including sleep apnea, and judging how a material or a medicine affects your general health. We write to your physician when something we see suggests a medical question.

    • Sleep apnea and other sleep disorders

    • Allergies and reactions

    • Medicines and general health

  • What we refer to another dentist

Care that needs a dentist who focuses on one field, such as braces, root canals on difficult teeth, gum surgery or the removal of a tooth that needs more than we offer.

    • Braces and aligners

    • Complex root canals

    • Surgery beyond simple removal

  • What we won't claim

That any material or procedure treats an illness or is better for your health. We don't remove sound fillings to treat symptoms.

    • No health claims for a material

    • No promised results

    • Results vary, and we say so

If you are worried about your health

Start with your physician. Bring us what they say.

If a question about your teeth is tied to a question about your health, such as a medicine, a diagnosis or a reaction to a material, we welcome a note from your physician, and with your written permission we'll write back.

If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling that spreads to your face, eye or neck, or bleeding that won't stop, go to an emergency room or call 911. For a broken or knocked-out tooth, call us right away.
