How fees work

Here is how paying works at Fernwood Dental, in the order most patients ask.

  • Insurance we work with

We file claims for you with dental plans, and what a plan pays is the plan's decision. Whether we are in network depends on the plan; the owner lists the plans here. We are not enrolled with Medi-Cal Dental.

    • Dental PPO plans: we file the claim

    • DHMO plans: ask us first

    • Medicare and Medicare Advantage: ask us what applies

    • Not enrolled with Medi-Cal Dental

  • If you pay yourself

If you don't have a plan, or you'd like to pay yourself, you pay at the visit and you know the fee before treatment starts, in writing. Financing is offered by third-party lenders. Approval and terms are set by the lender.

    • Pay at the visit

    • A written estimate first

    • Third-party financing, set by the lender

  • Receipts for reimbursement

After each visit we give you an itemized receipt with the procedure codes. You can send it to a plan that reimburses you. Whether the plan pays, and how much, is the plan's decision.

    • Itemized, every visit

    • Procedure codes included

  • An estimate in advance

You can ask for a written estimate before any treatment. If you're paying without insurance, we give you a written estimate in advance, when you schedule or whenever you ask. It lists the visit, each step we expect and the fee for each.

    • Written, before treatment

    • Each step and its fee

    • Yours to take home

  • Checking your benefits

Before your first visit, Wes can check what your plan says it covers and tell you what to expect. A plan's quote of benefits is an estimate, and the plan makes the final decision when it pays.

    • Wes checks your benefits first

    • What your plan quotes is an estimate

  • What the first visit includes

A first visit is about an hour: a talk, a cleaning if one is planned, an exam by Dr. DeJesus and X-rays only if she needs them. You leave with your options and a written estimate for anything that needs work.

    • About an hour

    • Cleaning and exam

    • Estimate in writing

Ask about a fee before you come

Wes can talk you through what to expect and what to ask your plan.
